I was pulling weeds outside and my cats wanted to join me—they can only be outside if they are on a leash. Tank, my male, likes to have me in sight, whereas Hershey, my female, likes to be wherever I am.

As I moved around the yard, I carefully arranged Hershey’s leash so she could easily follow me without getting tangled. As Tank watched from the comforts of the patio, she wandered around the landscaping. It felt good to relieve the new plants sprouting from the ground, from the rogue grass threatening to overtake them.

I looked up from time to time to ensure both my babies were okay. Both were doing their thing of eating grass (to puke up later), lounging in the sun, and watching me. I went back to the weeds happily enjoying my work.

The next time I checked on the cats, Hershey was standing frozen with her head up and the leash pulled as tight as it could without the breakaway collar letting loose. I followed the leash with my eyes and saw the elaborate tangle that went around the bricks and debris in the yard.

As I untangled the leash, it reminded me of all the times I thought I had laid out a good plan, only for it to take one unexpected turn after another. Unlike the past, I have learned—or rather accepted—that plans don’t always go from A straight to B. Sometimes, they hit D, G, Z, and P before returning to B.

I think this is going to be an interesting year. I’m prepared for whatever happens AND I’m going to just go with it instead of analyzing every step. There are no setbacks, only side steps, and I’m ready.

Bring it on.
